If the light behind a subject is brighter than the subject, the subject will be dark. Raise the brightness to a higher level. Menu>Brightness>+2 or +3. The subject may look a bit washed out but that's better than a black silohuette. The picture can be adjusted in Photoshop later or try the editing tools on the camera.

This is a nice shortcut. In camera mode, just press the Up and Down button on the center Navigation buttons to change the Zoom level quickly rather then pressing Menu>Zoom>Zoom Level.

"Automatic" White Balance seems to work the best for me. If you find your pictures are too blue or red while in camera mode, go to Menu>White Balance>Automatic
